Monroe County Attorney Collins Firing Investigated
At the Feb. 15 Monroe County Commission meeting County Attorney Richard Collins was fired.
Monroe County State Attorney Mark Kohl could be investigating whether Richard Collins' dismissal was discussed between some commissioners (currently referred to as the "Gang of Three" Mayor Sonny McCoy and commissioners Murray Nelson and Dixie Spehar) prior to the meeting, which would violate Florida's Sunshine Law prohibiting public policy from being discussed among elected officials in private.
A subpoena seeks all records from Jan. 1 to Feb. 17 to and from commissioners Dixie Spehar, George Neugent, Mayor Sonny McCoy, David Rice and Murray Nelson including: Interoffice memorandums, E-mails incoming and outgoing from all the commissioners and Willi's office, E-mail records for all commissioners' and Willi's executive assistants, incoming and outgoing telephone records from all office phones “accessible” to the commissioners, Cell phone records for the county-provided phones of the five commissioners and Willi from Jan. 1 to Feb. 17 and the minutes and the tape from the Feb. 15 Board of County Commissioners meeting.
