Florida Keys Beaches

The Monroe County Health Department said Sept. 20 that tests showed the presence of enteric bacteria, an indication of fecal pollution which may be from storm water runoff. This bacteria is present in all warm blooded animals and the bacteria will bloom in warm waters with little circulation when provided with an increase in nutrients. These are the exactly the conditions at most Keys Beaches where there is little wave action or tidal flow. A health department report indicated that Coco Plum Beach in Marathon, the Islamorada Public Library Beach and Founder’s Park Beach in Islamorada have elevated levels of the bacteria.
According to the health department, the bacteria may cause disease, infections and rashes. The department advises people not to swim or practice other water-related activities near the shore of these beaches until test results show that the water is safe. You can stay up to date on water testing at all Keys Beaches here.
